How Ice Cream Flavors Got Their Names

  • earnestly-chocolate.png

Named for Ernest L. Wilkinson, president of BYU from 1951-1971. Under his presidency, the student body increased from 4,000 to 25,000. The number of buildings increased from 6 to over 300. And ecclesiastical units went from 1 branch to 98 wards and 10 stakes. The Wilkinson Center carries his name.

  • lavells-vanilla.png

Named for LaVell Edwards, BYU football coach from 1972 – 2000. With 257 career victories, he ranks as one of the most successful NCAA college football coaches. Under his tenure, BYU won a national championship (1984). LaVell Edwards Stadium carries his name. The Creamery approached Coach Edwards and asked if we could name an ice cream after him, and what his favorite flavor was. His favorite flavor was vanilla, and LaVell’s vanilla was born.

  • cherry-rockwood.png

Named for Jennifer Rockwood, women’s soccer coach since 1989, who is the most decorated coach at BYU. Her teams have made the NCAA tournament 16 times and been the WCC champions for the past 5 years. 38 of her players have gone on to win All-American awards. She considers Cherry Rockwood to be her sweetest trophy. When the Creamery approached her about creating an ice cream in her name, she said her favorite flavors are the ones that combine fruit and chocolate.

  • roses-sneakerdoodle.png

Named for Dave Rose, BYU men’s basketball coach since 2005. During his tenure, the team experienced an amazing turnaround record in college basketball and consistently has 20-win seasons. He was named Mountain West Conference Coach of the Year 3 times, and his team won the MWC championship 4 times before changing to the West Coast Conference. Traditionally his wife bakes the team snickerdoodle cookies after each home game. The Rose family thought that creating Rose’s Sneakerdoodle would be a fun way to share this tradition with everyone at BYU.

  • mint-brownie.png

Inspired by the legendary mint brownies baked fresh on campus.

  • blue-goggles.png

Blue Goggles was inspired by the television show, BYU Sports Nation. In its fifth season, the show provides insight into the nationally acclaimed sports programs. The hosts regularly use the phrase “Looking through Blue Goggles” in discussing various
    aspects of each program.
