Frequently Asked Questions

Minimum Registration FAQ

Question answered on this page:

How many credits must I register for as a graduate student at BYU?
The yearly minimum registration requirement is administered as follows:

  • Students admitted fall semester must register for at least 2 hours in fall and at least 4 additional hours by summer term.
  • Students admitted winter semester must register for at least 2 hours in winter and at least 2 additional hours by summer term.
  • Students admitted spring term must register for at least 2 hours in spring.
  • Students admitted summer term must register for at least 2 hours in summer.
  • In subsequent years, all students will complete at least 6 hours per academic year.
  • During the final semester, and the semester of final oral or written examinations, a graduate student must be registered for at least 2 hours or pay an equivalent minimum registration fee to Graduate Studies for 2 semester hours of credit.
  • If a student applies for graduation, but does not complete all requirements within the academic year, the yearly six hour minimum registration requirement is still applicable.

What is the minimum number of credit hours a U.S. graduate student must be registered for to maintain current status?
U.S. graduate students are required to register for at least 2 credit hours during any semester or term in which they use any university facilities, consult with faculty, or take comprehensive or oral examinations. To retain active status and qualify for subsequent registration, graduate students must register for at least six credit hours each school year and receive acceptable grades (no D, E, UW, NS, or I grades are allowed, nor are audits nor correspondence courses). Students who do not fulfill this requirement are automatically dropped from their graduate program at the end of the school year. Such students lose their graduate status and must apply for readmission if they wish to continue.

How many credit hours must a graduate student have to be considered full-time?
A U.S. student who is enrolled for 8.5 or more credit hours in a semester or 4.5 credit hours in a term is considered full-time for tuition purposes. International students are required to register for 9.0 hours to be considered a full-time student.

If I'm graduating in August, in which term am I supposed to take the two credit hours?
Spring and summer terms are considered in combination; you can take one hour both terms or two hours either term.

I've heard that I can pay the equivalent of tuition for my last two credit hours. How do I do that?
You should be able to use thesis, dissertation, or project hours to fulfill your last semester registration requirement. In special circumstances, we can arrange that you pay the equivalent of two credit hours (see current tuition rates). Contact our office to ensure your registration is done properly. You may do this only to fulfill the registration requirement for your last two credit hours.

Can I check out books or use the P.E. facilities with my student ID card?
To be eligible for campus privileges, graduate students must be registered for at least two credit hours per semester or one per term.

I've heard I can have as few as two credits to be considered full-time. How can I do that?
Master’s and doctoral students who are enrolled for fewer than 8.5 credit hours per semester may petition for full-time status if they meet certain specific conditions. Requests for such an exception are made with the Petition for Graduate Full-time Status.

How Many credit hours must I register for the semester I graduate?
During the final semester, and the semester of final oral or written examinations, a graduate student must be registered for at least 2 hours or pay an equivalent minimum registration fee to Graduate Studies for 2 semester hours of credit.
