How to Apply (Step by Step)

  1. Go to the BYU Graduate Studies Application Login Page
  2. Create a new account and login
    • Click create account to go to the Applicant Account Profile Form
    • Fill out this form according to the instructions
    • Click create account to save your information
    • Your PIN will then be given, record this PIN to access your account later
    • Click login to access your online application now
  3. Start your application
    • From your application's Main Page, click APPLICATION FOR ADMISSION
    • This takes you to the Application Home Page
    • On the main section of this page there is a list of all you need to do to complete your online application
    • You can also download an Application Checklist to guide you through this process
    • Under *Application for Admission* in the menu to the left there are links to the different sections of your application
    • Begin your application by clicking PERSONAL INFORMATION
  4. Fill out your application
    • Fill out all forms and fields required (read all the instructions along the way and check for additional requirements specific to your program)
    • The whole application does not need to be completed in one sitting; you can save and come back to the data you have entered at anytime before submission
    • Click save often, found at the top and bottom of each section, to make sure your data is not lost
    • Clicking reset will blank all of the fields on that section of the application
    • At the end of each section go to the next section by clicking save & continue
    • You will receive a pop-up message if you have left any required fields blank; or, if they have been filled out incorrectly, you can:
      1. Fix the fields on the current form by closing the message window or by clicking continue
      2. Go to the next section, without fixing the fields, by closing the window, clicking "save" only, and then clicking on the section in the menu to the left that you would like to jump to
  5. Include at least three recommenders for your application
    • Click RECOMMENDATIONS in the menu to the left
    • You will come to the Recommendations Opening Page
    • Click on recommendation provider list to take you to the Recommendation Provider List Page
    • Click add, to add a provider to your list
    • Fill out the form (First and Last name is required, a valid email address is only required if you want your recommender to submit online)
    • Once you click save, this recommender is added to your list
    • If you chose for your recommender to submit online, an email is automatically sent to him/her
    • You are then taken back to the List Page and can add more recommenders
    • On this List Page you can also tell whether or not a recommender has started or completed your recommendation (you can submit your application with recommendations left to be completed)
    • You can also send a reminder to your recommender even after you have submitted
    • If you want to send the notification e-mail again, go to the Recommendation Provider List Page and check the boxes next to the recommender(s) to whom you would like to send a reminder
    • Click resend
    • You must put at least three recommenders on this page in order to be able to submit your application regardless of whether or not they will be submitting their recommendations online
  6. Download and print forms that need to be completed offline
    • Click DOWNLOADABLE FORMS in the menu to the left
    • These forms already have the information included that you have entered on your application
    • Complete the online Honor Code Commitment and download Form E to take to your interviewer
    • If you need any letters of recommendation to be submitted offline you will need to download the correct number of Letter of Recommendation forms
  7. Check your application for completion
    • Click the CHECK YOUR APPLICATION link in the left menu to search the required fields for incomplete or missing information
    • If you have filled in all the required fields the system will notify you that you application is ready for submission
    • If you still have required fields that are missing information or are incomplete, it will list them and provide links to access those fields
  8. Submit your application
    • Review your application in the PDF format provided, make sure all information entered is correct and all the documents you uploaded are included
    • Click Submit Application in the top right corner of the page to begin the submission process
    • Check the box to acknowledge that you are ready to submit
    • Click continue to select your payment type before submission will be complete
  9. Pay the application fee
    • First begin the submission process by completing the "Submit your application" section of this document
    • Fill out the form on the Application Fee Payment Page
    • You can pay by credit card online
    • Once you have completed the form, click pay & continue
    • Congratulations! Your submission is complete.
  10. Check your application status
    • You will receive an e-mail from Graduate Studies when your submitted application is downloaded to Route Y.
    • The e-mail will outline the details of how you can check the status of your application through Route Y and see when mailed application materials are received.
