Graduate Mentoring Awards

These awards are funded by Graduate Studies to promote both mentoring of graduate students and supporting graduate students as they serve as mentors to undergraduate students. Colleges may choose to recommend $4,000 for master's students and/or $5,000 for doctoral students, or divide the funds between two students. Faculty may apply for awards for graduate students involved in research projects, applied or clinical experiences, or undergraduate teaching.

Students don't apply for these grants directly. College deans invite selected faculty members to apply for these awards. Once awarded to the faculty, the funds will be transferred to the department's graduate funds account for distribution to the selected student(s) by the department. While students are not able to apply for these grants directly, they are encouraged to approach graduate faculty members as well as department administrators to express interest in this mentoring grant.

These awards are easy for faculty members to apply for. They only need to submit a 1-2 page proposal to apply for an award. College deans rank and recommend applications to the graduate dean. The graduate dean reviews and funds selected projects.

At the conclusion of the funding period, the faculty member submits a 1-page summary of the student’s involvement in the research, applied experience or teaching. In addition, students who receive this money are required to submit a 1-page summary of their experience at the conclusion. These brief final reports serve as our outcome measure for these awards.

Details on principles of graduate mentoring at BYU, the types of available awards, and the application process are available from your college dean.
