Glossary of Relevant Terms


Activity Series of actions that make up a process
Arrears An Amount owed to the employer as the result of a deduction not fully taken
Benefit Plan A specific benefit offering within a plan type
Benefit Plan Type A benefit category such as health, life, savings
Benefits Program A collection of benefits plans for which an employee is eligible
Business Title Title that goes with the position, not the individual (includes campus extension/address)
Child Node that is a subset of the parent node
Display Display Mode. Enables you to view information in certain pages, but not update the rows online. The fields will appear gray on the page.
Drill Down Go down to the next level of detail in a set of data
Effective Date Method of dating information in the system (allows predating actions)
Employee Type

Hourly: Students, Staff Temporary/On-Call/Part-time don't work the same number of hours each pay period
Exception Hourly: Full-time Staff work a set number of hours each pay period
Salaried: Administrative and Faculty earnings are based on an amount per pay period, rather than accumulated hours

End User Person who uses PeopleSoft to perform tasks
Enterprise All of the business units in the organization
ERP Enterprise Resource Planning (coordinated and integrated approach to system development)
Flat Amount Specific dollar amount (not a percentage)
Flat Rate Premium with a specified dollar amount
Gross Up Process used to calculate taxes and resultant gross pay from a check for an exact net amount

Iteration Repetition
Job Code Title (required field) Identities jobs (usually one to many relationship)
Legacy Existing system
Level Logical division in the security tree hierarchy
Metrics How results are measured
Node An individual organizational entity on the security tree
OLAP On-line Analytical Processing (multidimensional analysis of application data performed interactively
Parent A node with other nodes reporting to it
Pay Group A set of employees grouped together for payroll processing
Pay Line Record containing standard payroll information for an employee
Pay Sheet Repository for raw data needed to calculate pay for employees (earnings, hours, deductions, taxes and accounting data)
Position Code Not a required field (8 digit - alpha numeric) one to one relationship
Process Business function
RUG Regional Users Group
Roles Describes how people fit into work flow
Role Users Persons assigned to perform roles
Routing Connects information to people
Rules Company's business practices captured in software
Run ID Code that identifies a run control for batch processes
Scope Close up view of immediate project
Screens and Pages These words are interchangeable. Both refer to the current computer screen you are viewing. PeopleSoft screens are referred to as pages.
Sibling Nodes at the same level and subsets of the parent node
SIG Special Interest Group
Shadow System A system set up by a user to provide additional data not provided by the main system
Sponsor Person who owns the project
STAR Project to implement PeopleSoft Version 8.8 Human Resources for Education and Government
Step Actions that complete an activity
Translate Table A system edit table that stores codes and translate values for miscellaneous fields on the database
Unsheet Pay Sheet erased
