What Are Freshman Academy Learning Communities?
A significant number of incoming freshmen at BYU choose to participate in Freshman Academy Learning Communities. This is a program which enables students with similar interests and/or majors to live in the same housing complex, to attend the same set of three or more University Core and/or major- related classes, and to enjoy the benefits and fellowship of a learning community. Students may choose from a wide range of different options, including some all-honors communities.

As part of a national movement, BYU's Freshman Academy Learning Community program helps students of all skill and maturity levels become fully integrated into all aspects of university life. Freshman Academy students may live in the same housing area or complex and take the same set of classes with other residents. Working together, they are better prepared to become outstanding scholars, citizens, and disciples of Jesus Christ.

Trained peer mentors, typically juniors and seniors who were themselves Freshman Academy students, work with each learning community, directing students to university resources, helping them organize study groups, and supporting good habits of learning. Freshman Academy promotes community among faculty and students by encouraging informal, out-of-class interaction, such as eating meals and attending campus cultural events together. As one student said, "Because it set the tone for my education and helped me develop as a learner, Freshman Academy was the best thing that ever happened to me at BYU."

How Does Freshman Academy Work With On-Campus Housing?
For Fall Semester 2009, all students will follow the same Housing application and room selection process regardless of their participation in a Freshman Academy learning community.

Freshman Academy offers two kinds of learning community experiences: 1) neighborhood learning communities based on the housing complex where students reside; and 2) non-housing specific learning communities. Students interested in participating in a Freshman Academy learning community must also apply to Freshman Academy.

Once enrolled in Freshman Academy, changing rooms from one housing complex to another will affect participation in neighborhood learning communities.
