Fire regulations are designed to protect people and facilities. Rooms will be checked periodically to make sure there are no hazards. Any violators will be disciplined on the first offense, and could be asked to leave housing. Those responsible for setting off false alarms or vandalizing fire equipment will be referred to the University Police and could be asked to leave the University.
Helaman Residents and Heritage Residents of Buildings 9-10 and 25-30: Your room/apartment is equipped with a sprinkler for the purpose of fire suppression. The sprinkler is triggered when a heat sensitive chemical expands and breaks a glass tube in the sprinkler head. It will not activate from the presence of smoke alone. It could however, activate if tampered with. Do not hit, hang on, or fasten items to any part of the sprinkler. You could be held responsible for damage resulting from tampering or inappropriate use of the fire sprinkler suppression system. The University is not responsible for any damages or losses which occur because a sprinkler is activated for any reason.
Smoke Detectors and Fire Extinguishers
Smoke detectors should not be covered or blocked. Do not remove the smoke detector or take the batteries out. If your smoke detector "chirps," call Auxiliary Maintenance at 801-422-4411. To replace batteries, contact your RA.
Fire extinguishers are located in apartments, corridors, and lobbies and in the stairwells of Wyview Park. At the beginning of the semester, your resident assistant will instruct you in the proper use of the fire extinguisher. If you need to use a fire extinguisher to put out a small fire, notify your hall advisor immediately so the extinguisher can be recharged.
Review the fire escape route posted in your apartment or room so you will be prepared for an emergency evacuation. To practice emergency evacuation, you will participate in fire drills at least once a semester or term.
Any time you hear the fire alarm, you should:
- Close your windows and door
- Wear your shoes
- Take your room key
- Walk or crawl (if there is smoke) to the nearest exit
- Use the stairway, not elevators, to leave
Don't go back into the building until your residence hall staff, a fire officer, or a police officer says it's safe to do so.
If You Find a Fire
- Sound the alarm. If there is no alarm, warn other residents by shouting and knocking on doors as you leave.
- Leave the building. Try to rescue others only if you can do so safely. Move away from the building to the designated area, and out of the way of the fire department.
- Call the Fire Department. Dial 911 and give as much information as possible.
- Don't try to put out a serious fire yourself. You're important to us. Leave the building and wait for the fire department.

Small appliances and space heaters are not allowed in the bedrooms, with the exception of personal refrigerators provided by the university. We recommend that UL approved irons and popcorn poppers be used in designated areas.
If you need to use extension cords, please keep the number to a minimum, and use only those in good condition. Frayed or worn cords are dangerous.
Incense, candles, or any open flames are not allowed in the residence halls. Barbecues are only permitted in designated areas. Use of fireplaces in Heritage Halls is prohibited.
Please don't store excess paper or other flammable products. Christmas trees must be artificial and treated with a flame retardant.
Do not prop doors open, and keep exits and corridors clear.
Your BYU On-Campus Housing Agreement,
Accepting a Brigham Young University Housing & Dining Agreement is your acknowledgment that you have read, understood, and agreed to the Terms and Conditions, including, without limitation, the Terms and Conditions relating to payment of late fees, termination and the BYU Honor Code. Church Educational System Honor Code
BYU Residence Life upholds the Church Educational System Honor Code. You are expected to abide by your commitment to the Honor Code as part of your housing agreement. This includes the Honor Code Statement, the Academic Honesty Policy, the Dress and Grooming Standards, the Residential Living Standards, and the Continuing Student Ecclesiastical Endorsement.
Living in a Community
You should feel comfortable in your room and residence hall, and so should your neighbors. Excessive noise, disturbing the peace, and disruptive behavior are all inappropriate actions. Examples of disruptive behavior include pranks; snowball, water, pillow, paint ball or food fights; and in-line skating, roller-skating, skateboarding, and long boarding.
Students who persist in such behavior could be asked to change rooms, transfer to another housing area, or leave On-Campus Housing. They may also be referred to the Honor Code office.
Students may be requested to leave the university if their behavior could result in injury to themselves or others.
Normally, students who have been asked to leave BYU as a result of disciplinary action must leave housing within 72 hours after notification by the Honor Code Office or area management. However, in some cases, they may be required to leave sooner.
Each floor/apartment has the opportunity to establish quiet hours through community standards. However, quiet hours are in effect 24 hours a day during prep days and finals week;
TVs, DVD Players, Stereos And Radios
You're welcome to bring entertainment equipment for your room or apartment, but please be considerate of your roommates by keeping the volume at a level that will not disturb them. Outside antennas are not permitted. Please be aware that copyright laws prohibit showing video or DVD movies in common areas in or around the residence halls. Tampering with or altering university audiovisual equipment, including cable, is prohibited.
Decorations should not be hung on the outside of windows or buildings, on the ceiling, or on window coverings. Fire code allows up to 25% of the entire door to be covered with decorations. Make sure your decorations can be easily removed (i.e. no paint, stickers, or contact paper). You are responsible for any damages.
Helaman Halls: While decorating your room, you may use 3M Command™ hooks, white removable mounting adhesive such as Plasti-Tak©, and provided bulletin boards and tack strips. Please don't use nails, tacks, tape, or other types of adhesives.
Heritage Halls, Wyview Park, and Foreign Language Student Residence: While decorating rooms, residents may use nails and white removable mounting adhesive such as Plasti-Tak©. An apartment can only have 6 nail holes per room (including nails already present when residents move in). Residents will be charged a repair fee for each additional hole when they move out. Please don't use other types of adhesives.
Apartment And Room Care
Each month, Residence Life staff will do apartment/room checks to help you ensure proper care and upkeep. Improper care can result in referral to area management, cleaning charges, or both.
You're welcome to rearrange the furniture in your room to suit your taste as long as the arrangement is deemed safe by your hall advisor. Please do not move furniture out of your room or commons rooms. Beds can only be elevated on supports provided by housing. You may not move appliances.
Pets And Animals
Pets and animals of any kind (including fish) are not allowed in the residence halls. The only exceptions are special assistance animals for residents with disabilities, or fish for certain biology classes. If you need to keep fish for a class, you must receive prior approval from your hall advisor, and you may keep the fish only until your assignment is complete.
Your parents' homeowners insurance may cover your personal belongings while you're at school. However, we recommend that you purchase renter's insurance. The university does not accept responsibility for personal belongings that are damaged or stolen in the residence halls.
We support the CES Honor Code. Anything deemed by your hall advisor or other housing officials to be objectionable, obscene or disruptive is not allowed in the residence halls. You can request at the U.S. Post Office that objectionable material not be delivered to your mailbox.
Sunbathing And Swimwear
You're welcome to sunbathe in designated areas Monday-Saturday. See your hall advisor for these areas. Do not use BYU bedding or furniture.
Swimming attire must be modest in fit and style. See-through suits, cut-offs, bikinis, and men's Speedos are not permitted. All swimsuits and other clothing with straps or ties are to remain fastened or tied while sunbathing.
Advertising, door-to-door sales, sales presentations, and collection drives are not permitted in university housing.
Operating a business based from your apartment/room is prohibited. Use of your residence hall address or apartment/room telephone number for business purposes is not permitted. Contact your area management for further clarification.
Gambling is not permitted in the residence halls.
Use of Community Facilities
Community areas in the residence halls are for residents to enjoy. Make sure you clean up after yourself and leave the facility ready for someone else. You will be charged for any repairs or cleaning due to damage or littering. Leave the furniture, including cushions and microwaves, in the lounges.
Items left beyond the contract period will be turned over to BYU Lost and Found. You will be charged daily room rates until all personal items are out of your room or storage area. You're welcome to leave your things in your room during Thanksgiving and Christmas breaks, but please don't store your friends' belongings.
For your protection, your bike must be registered with the BYU Traffic Office. Bikes may only be locked to approved bike racks. Do not store your bike in your room or in the stairwells. Limited indoor bike storage is available. Contact your area front desk for more information. Bikes left after the contract period will be turned over to University Police.

Servicing Your Vehicle
Please don't service your vehicle in the housing parking lots. This includes changing oil or mechanical repairs. You will be charged for any damage to the parking lot.
Your safety and security is one of our top concerns. The university is not exempt from crime. You need to take an active role in ensuring your own safety and the safety of your community.
Residence Halls Doors And Keys
For your safety, the doors at Helaman Halls, Heritage Halls, and the FLSR commons rooms are locked each night after visiting hours and opened again the next morning at 8 a.m.
Residence Hall outer doors at Helaman Halls can be opened by card access, and room doors are opened with a key. At Heritage Halls, your room key opens your bedroom door, your apartment front door, the residence hall front doors, and the residence hall back door adjacent to your apartment, except in Buildings 9, 10, 25, 26, 27, 28, 29, and 30. For these buildings the outer doors and your apartment can be opened by card access and your bedroom is opened with a key. Residents of the FLSR and Wyview Park have keys that open their apartment doors only.
If you lose your ID card, immediately deactivate the card through My BYU. If you are unable to log in to My BYU, please report your card lost at the ID Center, 2310 WSC, 801-422-3866.
If you lose your key, notify your hall advisor as soon as possible. Charges to replace lost keys are as follows:
- Room Key $30
- Closet Key $5
- Mail Key $5
All residents should keep their apartment and room door(s) locked and carry their keys at all times. Never duplicate your key, or loan it or your card to anyone. Never prop open an outside door, or prevent doors from locking. The university is not liable for any damaged or missing items. Report any problems to your hall advisor immediately.
Don't force the windows open beyond the locking mechanisms, or tamper with the locks or screens. For privacy and safety reasons, Helaman Halls residents are not allowed to converse through first floor windows.
Don't go onto the ledges or roofs. This is considered trespassing, and carries a minimum $50 fine.
Don't abuse the elevators. Any violation will result in assessment for service and repair.
Fireworks and Explosives
University Policy prohibits fireworks or other explosive devices in your room or around the halls at any time.
Guns and other weapons, such as large knives, bows and arrows, swords (including decorative weapons), and paint guns are not allowed on campus. Any firearms, pellet guns, BB and paint guns, wrist rockets, slingshots, and other similar items, as well as ammunition, cannot be stored in the apartment. Violators will be referred to the University Police and Honor Code Office (http://honorcode.byu.edu/), and their rental agreement will be jeopardized.

Student Health Center
The Student Health Center is located at 1750 North Wymount Terrace Drive. To make an appointment, call 801-422-5156 between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m., Monday-Friday. Urgent Care is available 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday-Friday and 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday. For emergencies after hours, students should contact local emergency facilities by calling 911.

Residential Living Standards in the CES Honor Code dictate the following visiting guidelines for BYU students living both on and off campus:
- Visitors may not be in the building after visiting hours.
- Visitors of the opposite gender may not be in the bedrooms or bathrooms. Visitors may use the guest restrooms located in the lobbies and common areas.
- All visitors must comply with the Residential Living Standards while on the premises of student housing.
- You are responsible for the behavior of your guests at all times.

Helaman Halls has an open house on Wednesdays and Sundays from 7:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m.
Residents 18 years of age or older may host one guest at a time with approval of their Hall Advisor and roommates.
- Residents must complete a “Guest Registration Form” prior to a guest’s arrival. This form is submitted to the Hall Advisor and must include the signature of all roommates.
- Guests may stay in the hall or apartment up to three consecutive nights.
- Guests must comply with the Residential Living Standards while on the premises of student housing.
- Residents are responsible for the behavior of their guest at all times.
- All overnight guests must be 18 years of age or older and are required to present identification.
Residents under the age of 18 may not host a guest.
Residents who fail to register their overnight guest will be charged a $40 per night “unregistered guest” fee.
Residents may not alter furniture, and mattresses may not be placed on the floor to accommodate guests.
