12 things new graduate students should know

  1. You will be evaluated at least twice each academic year with regards to your progress in your program (Fall through Summer).
  2. There is an annual minimum registration requirement: 6 hours in an academic year.
  3. Masters Degree: need to submit a Program of Study by the 3rd week of your second semester. Doctoral Degree: need to submit a Program of Study by the 3rd week of your second year.
  4. You must be registered for at least 2 hours when you graduate.
  5. Your final Program of Study GPA must be at least 3.0 to receive your graduate degree. (Note: Law students check with your registrar.)
  6. 1-5 are university minimum requirements.
  7. Your graduate program manager (GPM) is a great resource when you have questions regarding your program.  You will have (or have already had) an orientation where you will be given a Graduate Handbook for department requirements. 
  8. Grad Progress (GradProg) is a new webpage in which you will select your committee member names, your program of study courses and track milestones towards graduation. You can find GradProg in myBYU (enter gradprog in the shortcut url box) or enter the website address: https://gradprogress.sim.byu.edu.
  9. With 2 hours of registration you are entitled to university privileges including university housing, student employment, library, counseling, UTA pass, etc.
  10. You are automatically a member of the Graduate Student Society. The Professional Presentation Award is an additional source of funding provided by the GSS.  The GSS email address is:  byugss@byu.edu
